The Revolution Way

Mission
Revolution Basketball has a two-part mission:
(1) We use basketball as a way for young people to embrace challenges, pursue continual growth, and appreciate the good that comes from being part of a team.(2) We serve as a hub for coaching excellence, providing opportunities for coaches to learn, grow, and make the most of the chance to impact a young person’s life.In the process, we work to develop basketball players who are skilled, smart, and adaptable, using an age-appropriate, evidence-based curriculum. Our ultimate goal is to provide an environment where every athlete and every coach can experience the joy and fulfillment that comes from hard work, growth, and community.

Vision
Our vision is that Revolution Basketball will

  • provide a place for every athlete to discover what's possible through teamwork, purposeful effort, and a commitment to continual growth

  • serve as a model for player and personal development, coaching excellence, and continuous learning.

  • create a culture where every coach is committed to lifelong learning and to implementing best practices from the global player development community.

  • not only develop outstanding players but also elevate the quality of coaching in our basketball community.

  • create opportunities for players and coaches to become the best versions of themselves.

Philosophy
Our guiding philosophy:
a culture of embracing challenges, pursuing continual growth, and holding each other accountable to our standards+an environment that fosters learning, engagement, and joy=the opportunity to experience personal and team success

Player DevelopmentWe believe that with quality instruction, sustained effort, and the right environment, every player can become a better version of themselves.Revolution Basketball employs a coaching curriculum informed by evidence-based practices from the global basketball community. We teach primarily through meaningful, game-like experiences that require players to perceive, decide, and execute. We work to create a learning environment where technical skill and decision-making develop together, since one is only useful alongside the other. Our goal is to train in ways that transfer to live competition so our players are adaptable and confident. We want to build players who have ownership over their game and the ability to respond to the varied situations they encounter on the court, not drill masters who look great in practice but can't navigate the speed and intensity of games. No matter how good the instruction or the environment, there are no short cuts. Players are developed over weeks, months, and years through consistent, purposeful practice and training. Long-term development will always be more important to us than short-term results.

Coaching StandardsRevolution Basketball seeks out coaches who approach their role with a sense of professionalism and are committed to becoming the best coaches they can be.In exchange, we invest in our coaches through training and access to high-quality learning resources. All our coaches will engage in a professional development program designed to make them more effective teachers of the game and leaders of young men. We will also provide them with access to learning resources that help expand their knowledge of the game and best practices for teaching it.Coaches will also draw from a common curriculum built on evidence-based methods for effective teaching. This means each team will not only get a baseline of quality instruction but also will use a consistent terminology and common principles of offense and defense.A coach can have a profound impact on how a young person develops as an athlete and a person. We treat coaching like the important profession it is and help ensure that our coaches are ready to meet the awesome responsibility and amazing opportunity that come with the job.

Programs

Player Development in a Team ContextBasketball is a team game, and we believe players develop best in a team environment, over the course of a season practicing and playing together. For that reason, most of our instruction and player development takes place in the context of team training. We work to develop technical ability and basketball IQ together, rather than in isolation, since one is only useful alongside the other.Learning in a team environment gives players plenty of opportunities to make decisions in game-like settings and increases basketball IQ since they have more chances to see how the parts fit into the whole picture.Player development looks different when viewed from a the perspective of a team playing together for a season, rather than a collection of individuals playing together for a weekend. Players and coaches can track growth over time. They can measure success through shared goals, not just in games but even in practice. And they can make each other better in ways that aren't possible in isolation or with "fly-in" teams.Above all, working in a team environment teaches how to be a good teammate: how to lift up others through your efforts and work toward something larger than yourself. We want Revolution players to develop the important skills and mindset that come from working with a group toward a common goal over weeks and months.

Healthy Practice-to-Game Ratio
and Right-Sized Teams
A commitment to player development means that we place the right focus on the process of getting better (practice) and not just the outcome of the games. That's hard to do when a team practices once a week (or not at all) and plays in tournaments every weekend.Revolution teams will practice twice a week over the course of 12-14 weeks (depending on the age group). Each team will play in 4-6 tournaments designed to provide challenging competition and opportunities to test ourselves and evaluate our development and progress.Revolution teams will be capped at 12 players per team. This number has benefits for both practice and games. Players will be on a rotation so that we take a smaller number to each tournament, ensuring meaningful minutes for each player. Every player will play in the same number of tournaments. This approach helps keep the focus where it belongs: on player development through practice combined with meaningful game experience.
